Fusarium chlamydosporum is a ubiquitous soil-borne fungal pathogen responsible for various fusarium wilt and rot diseases in a wide range of host plants. As a member of the Fusarium genus, it is highly resilient, capable of surviving in the soil and on plant debris for extended periods due to the production of thick-walled chlamydospores, which are resistant structures that remain dormant until favorable conditions arrive.

The host range of this pathogen is remarkably broad, encompassing vegetable crops such as tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers, as well as various cereals, legumes, and ornamental flowers. It primarily affects the root system and vascular tissues, leading to severe nutritional disruption and systemic wilting, which often results in significant economic losses in both open-field and greenhouse production systems.

Symptoms typically start with the yellowing and wilting of lower leaves, often progressing toward the top of the plant during periods of high transpiration. A close examination of the root system reveals significant necrosis, discoloration of the vascular tissues, and root decay. Under high humidity, a mycelial mat with a white or reddish tint may appear on the base of the stem or the soil surface near the plant.

Development and spread are strongly influenced by environmental factors. High soil temperatures, excessive soil moisture, poor drainage, and low soil pH are primary drivers of infection. The pathogen spreads primarily through contaminated soil, infected seeds, farm machinery, and runoff water. Once established in the soil, the fungus can infect subsequent crops even if they are not the primary host, increasing the disease pressure.

  • Implement long-term crop rotation to break the pathogen's life cycle.
  • Apply fungicidal seed treatments to protect young seedlings.
