Fusarium cortaderiae is a fungal pathogen within the Fusarium genus, part of the Fusarium sambucinum species complex. This pathogen is a significant cause of Fusarium head blight (FHB) in various cereal crops. As part of a diverse group of Fusarium species, it represents a global challenge in agriculture due to its impact on yield and the production of toxic secondary metabolites.

The primary hosts for this pathogen include wheat, barley, oats, and maize. While the fungus can infect plants at different developmental stages, infection during the flowering stage is particularly destructive. This timing directly interferes with pollination and kernel filling, resulting in significantly reduced grain quality and total crop loss.

Symptoms of the disease are characterized by premature bleaching of the wheat heads. Under humid conditions, visible masses of pinkish or orange fungal spores appear on the glumes and spikelets. Infections can also lead to stem base discoloration and rot. The affected grains often become shriveled, discolored, and light, making them unsuitable for processing.

The development and spread of Fusarium cortaderiae are favored by warm, humid weather conditions, especially during the anthesis (flowering) phase of the host plants. The fungus overwinters in infested crop residues, soil, and seed stocks, which serve as the primary inoculum sources for the subsequent growing season, facilitating the initial spread of the disease.

The economic impact of the pathogen is twofold: direct yield loss and the contamination of grain with harmful mycotoxins such as nivalenol and deoxynivalenol. These toxins pose severe risks to both human and animal health. Management strategies involve crop rotation, the use of resistant cultivars, tillage practices that bury infested debris, and targeted fungicide applications during the critical window of plant flowering.
