Description

The fungus Fusarium cucurbiticola is the primary agent responsible for Fusarium wilt in various cucurbit species. This pathogen is a significant threat to agriculture as it invades the vascular system of the host, systematically obstructing the transport of water and essential nutrients throughout the plant.

Cucurbits such as cucumbers, pumpkins, squash, melons, and watermelons are highly susceptible to this disease. The infection can occur at any stage of plant development, with younger seedlings being particularly prone to damping-off, while mature plants often exhibit severe wilting symptoms during the fruit-set period.

Early symptoms include the yellowing of lower leaves and a temporary wilting that recovers overnight. As the infection progresses, the wilt becomes permanent, and the lower stem may exhibit brown necrotic lesions. Cutting the stem reveals characteristic browning of the vascular tissues, which confirms the blockage caused by the fungal hyphae.

Environmental conditions that favor the development of Fusarium cucurbiticola include high soil moisture levels, poor drainage, and soil temperatures between 20°C and 28°C. The fungus is persistent and can survive as chlamydospores in the soil or on infested crop debris for several years without a host.

Management strategies focus on a multi-faceted approach, including long crop rotation cycles and the use of pathogen-free seeds. Prophylactic measures involve improving soil drainage, balancing fertilization to avoid excessive nitrogen, and utilizing biological control agents like Trichoderma spp. to suppress the pathogen in the soil environment.
