Description
Fusarium dlaminii is a microscopic soil-borne fungus belonging to the genus Fusarium, which acts as a causative agent for various fusarium diseases. In plant pathology, this species is recognized as a pathogen capable of infecting the root system and vascular tissues, leading to metabolic disruption and general wilting of the plant organism.
This pathogen is most commonly found on various cereal crops, including maize, wheat, and sorghum. Under intensive farming conditions, Fusarium dlaminii can exist in the soil as a saprophyte, but under favorable conditions, it quickly switches to a parasitic lifestyle, invading the tissues of weakened plants.
The main symptoms of infection include yellowing and curling of the leaves, stunted growth of seedlings, and browning of the root collar. In severe cases, root rot occurs, preventing the uptake of water and nutrients, which results in premature plant death or a significant decrease in overall yield potential.
Development of the fungus is favored by high soil moisture, moderate air temperatures in the 20–25°C range, and poor soil aeration. Additional spreading factors include monoculture, the accumulation of crop residues in the soil, and root damage caused by pests, through which fungal spores easily penetrate the plant.
The protection strategy includes the following measures:
- Strict crop rotation to reduce the infectious load in the soil.
- Usage of high-quality, certified, and healthy seeds.
- Seed treatment with modern fungicides before planting.
- Ensuring optimal soil drainage and structure.
- Timely control of soil pests that damage root systems.
The harmfulness of Fusarium dlaminii lies not only in direct yield losses but also in the potential accumulation of mycotoxins, which compromise grain quality and pose risks to animal and human health. A comprehensive agrotechnical approach remains the only reliable way to control this specific pathogen.
