The causative agent of this disease is the soil-borne fungus Fusarium haematococcum, which serves as the anamorph state of Nectria haematococca. This pathogen belongs to the Fusarium genus and is known for its extreme versatility, surviving in soil and plant debris as chlamydospores for several years, making it a persistent challenge for commercial crop production.
The host range of Fusarium haematococcum is remarkably broad, affecting various legume crops, vegetables such as tomatoes and cucurbits, and even woody ornamental species. It causes significant damage by attacking roots, stems, and fruits, often leading to post-emergence damping-off and systemic decay that destroys the vascular tissue of the host plant.
Symptomatology involves the appearance of dark, water-soaked lesions on the root collar or stems near the soil line. As the disease progresses, these lesions expand into necrotic areas, often accompanied by a white or pinkish mold growth. Foliar symptoms include interveinal chlorosis, permanent wilting, and stunting, as the damaged root system loses its ability to transport water and nutrients.
Favorable conditions for the development and spread of this fungus include high soil moisture, poor drainage, and moderate to warm temperatures (typically 20°C–28°C). The pathogen is disseminated through contaminated farm equipment, infected seeds, and water movement within the field, often proliferating rapidly in monoculture environments where the soil microbiome has been depleted.
The economic impact of the disease is substantial, resulting in reduced stand counts, low fruit quality, and total crop failure in severe cases. Management strategies focus on an integrated approach: using pathogen-free seeds, implementing strict crop rotation protocols, improving soil aeration, and applying biological or chemical fungicides as part of a proactive plant health maintenance program.
