The causal agent of this disease is the fungus Fusarium heterosporum, a significant plant pathogen within the Fusarium genus. This fungus is known for its ability to persist in plant debris and soil, acting as a recurring threat to agricultural productivity by infecting various cereal crops during their reproductive stages.
The primary hosts of this pathogen include major cereal grains such as wheat, barley, rye, and oats. The fungus specifically targets the heads (spikes) of the plants, colonizing the glumes and floral parts during flowering, which leads to substantial disruption of the grain filling process and compromises the overall yield potential.
Symptoms of the infection typically manifest as the appearance of a characteristic pinkish or whitish mycelial growth on the wheat spikes.
