Description

The causative agent of this disease is the soil-borne fungus Fusarium hostae. It is a highly destructive pathogen that primarily invades the root system and vascular tissues of the plant, significantly hindering the uptake of water and essential nutrients, which eventually leads to total physiological collapse.

Hosta cultivars are the primary host for this fungus. While some varieties may show higher resistance, the pathogen remains a significant threat in nurseries, residential gardens, and public landscapes, especially where plants are densely packed or growing in poorly drained soil conditions.

Symptoms typically manifest as chlorosis or yellowing of the leaves, often starting from the margins and progressing inward. As the disease advances, the plant will show signs of wilting despite adequate soil moisture, and an inspection of the rootstock usually reveals necrotic, mushy, or discolored tissues.

The development of Fusarium hostae is strongly favored by high soil humidity and temperatures ranging from 20 to 25 degrees Celsius. The pathogen is easily spread through contaminated soil, infected nursery stock, or garden tools, and it is capable of surviving in the substrate for several years in the form of chlamydospores.

Effective management requires a proactive integrated approach. Gardeners should focus on improving soil drainage, practicing strict sanitation by cleaning garden tools, and sourcing disease-free plants. Once infection is confirmed, affected plants should be removed immediately to prevent spread, and the surrounding soil should be treated with appropriate fungicides to reduce the pathogen load in the growing area.
