The pathogen responsible for this disease is the microscopic fungus Fusarium incarnatum, which belongs to the Ascomycota division. It is a highly adaptable phytopathogen capable of infecting a wide range of agricultural crops. The disease is classified as a Fusarium infection and manifests as various types of rot that affect both underground organs and above-ground parts of plants throughout their development stages.

Crops susceptible to this fungus include cereal grains like wheat and barley, as well as maize, soybeans, legumes, and various vegetables and fruits. The pathogen can infect seedlings, causing damping-off, or attack adult plants by invading the vascular system, grains, or fruits. This versatility makes it a significant threat not only during the active growing season but also during post-harvest storage.

Key symptoms of the infection include the appearance of dark lesions on the root crown, the development of root rots, and lodging of the crops. Infected tissues often show a characteristic white, pink, or cream-colored mold, which consists of mycelium and conidial spores. When the head or ear of a plant is affected, it may exhibit premature whitening or browning, leading to shriveled, low-quality grains that are unsuitable for consumption or planting.

The development of the fungus is favored by high humidity in both soil and air, along with temperatures ranging from +15 to +25 degrees Celsius. The pathogen persists in crop residues, soil, and contaminated seeds, which serve as primary infection sources. High planting density, poor crop rotation, mechanical damage by pests, and nutrient imbalances significantly increase the vulnerability of the crop to rapid disease spread.

The economic damage caused by Fusarium incarnatum involves substantial yield losses and degradation of product quality due to the accumulation of mycotoxins. To effectively protect crops, growers must implement an integrated pest management strategy:
