Description

Fusarium inflexum is a fungal pathogen notorious for causing vascular wilt in various agricultural crops. By invading the plant's xylem vessels, the fungus mechanically obstructs the upward flow of water and nutrients, causing the host to exhibit severe physiological distress and often leading to death if left untreated.

This pathogen has a wide host range, primarily affecting vegetable and various field crops. Fusarium inflexum survives effectively in the soil environment for several seasons, forming resistant structures known as chlamydospores. These structures enable the fungus to persist in agricultural fields even in the absence of a suitable host plant, making crop rotation essential.

Symptoms often begin with the yellowing of lower leaves, followed by wilting that occurs during the hottest part of the day. As the disease progresses, the plant becomes permanently wilted. A diagnostic cut through the lower stem typically reveals discolored, reddish-brown vascular bundles, which is the most reliable sign of a vascular Fusarium infection.

The development and spread of Fusarium inflexum are highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly soil temperature and moisture. Warm soil temperatures paired with poor drainage create an ideal habitat for spore germination and root penetration. Furthermore, root-knot nematodes and other soil pests can create wounds that provide an entry point for the fungus.

Effective disease management relies on an integrated approach. Essential strategies include:

  • Utilizing disease-resistant cultivars whenever possible.
  • Ensuring proper soil drainage to avoid waterlogging.
  • Practicing strict crop rotation with non-host species.
  • Using appropriate soil fungicides and seed treatments to lower the initial inoculum pressure in the field.
