Fusarium kyushuense is a fungal pathogen belonging to the Fusarium genus, known for causing significant diseases in various agricultural crops. It acts as a soil-borne and seed-borne pathogen, severely impacting the vascular systems and root development of host plants, leading to substantial yield losses.
The primary hosts for this fungus include cereal crops such as wheat, barley, and maize. The pathogen is capable of attacking plants at multiple developmental stages, from seedling emergence, which causes damping-off, to the grain-filling stage, where it manifests as head blight or spikelet infection.
Key symptoms of the disease include chlorosis and wilting of foliage, decay of the crown and root tissues, and the appearance of pink or whitish mycelial growth on the grain heads. Furthermore, the infection is often accompanied by the production of secondary metabolites known as mycotoxins, which compromise grain safety.
