Description

Fusarium lactis is a pathogenic fungus that causes vascular wilt, commonly known as Fusarium wilt, primarily affecting tomato plants. As a soilborne pathogen, it invades the vascular system of the host, impeding the transport of nutrients and water, which ultimately leads to the plant's premature wilting and death.

While tomatoes are the primary host for this pathogen, it can also survive in the rhizosphere of various weeds and other vegetable crops. Its ability to persist as chlamydospores in the soil for several years makes it a persistent challenge for commercial greenhouse production and small-scale farming alike.

Symptoms usually start with yellowing on the lower leaves, often appearing on one side of the leaf or plant first. As the infection progresses, the yellowing extends upward, followed by wilting that occurs during the heat of the day. A definitive diagnostic sign is the darkening of the vascular tissue inside the main stem, visible when cut longitudinally.

The development of Fusarium lactis is heavily favored by warm temperatures (ranging from 25°C to 30°C) and moist soil conditions. The pathogen spreads primarily through contaminated soil, infected seeds, or infested agricultural equipment. Poor soil drainage and mechanical injury to roots during transplanting facilitate the entry of the fungus into the plant.

Economic damage is significant due to the total loss of marketable fruit and the difficulty of controlling the pathogen once it has established itself in the field. Effective management involves a combination of preventive strategies: selecting resistant varieties, maintaining optimal soil pH, ensuring proper crop rotation, and utilizing bio-control agents or chemical fungicides during the early growth stages.
