Description

Fusarium lateritium is a microscopic phytopathogenic fungus from the Fusarium genus that serves as the causal agent for fusarium wilt, twig blight, and various rot diseases in plants. This pathogen is known for its high ecological plasticity, allowing it to survive for extended periods in the soil and on plant debris in the form of chlamydospores.

The fungus affects a wide range of agricultural and ornamental crops, including stone and pome fruit trees, grapes, citrus, and various field or vegetable crops. In orchards, it typically manifests as twig blight, leading to the gradual desiccation and death of branches, which can eventually kill the entire tree.

Major symptoms of infection include browning and necrosis of shoots, the appearance of characteristic orange or reddish spore pustules on the bark, and systemic vascular wilt. When the root system or the base of the stem is affected, plants often exhibit chlorosis, curling, stunted growth, and rapid wilting leading to total death.

The damage caused by Fusarium lateritium is primarily due to the disruption of water transport within the plant caused by mycelial clogging of the vascular system and the release of toxic metabolites by the pathogen. This leads to a significant decrease in yields, reduced fruit quality, and, in severe cases, total orchard loss, posing a serious economic threat.

Effective management relies on an integrated approach: using pathogen-free planting material, pruning and destroying infected branches promptly with tool disinfection, and maintaining proper crop rotation. Fungicide applications during high-risk periods and maintaining optimal agronomic practices are essential to minimize the spread and impact of the fungus.
