Fusarium neocosmosporiellum is a fungal pathogen notorious for causing vascular wilt and root rot in various agricultural crops. Being a soil-borne organism, it remains dormant in the soil for extended periods in the form of chlamydospores, making it a persistent threat in commercial crop production systems.

This pathogen specifically infects the roots, colonizing the plant’s vascular system, which disrupts the transport of water and nutrients. Its host range is broad, significantly affecting vegetables such as tomatoes and peppers, as well as several leguminous crops. Greenhouse environments provide ideal conditions for the rapid multiplication of the pathogen.

The disease symptoms typically begin with the yellowing and wilting of lower leaves, often appearing on one side of the plant initially. As the infection progresses, the entire plant may collapse. A diagnostic sign is the vascular browning visible within the stem when it is cut horizontally, which indicates that the fungus has obstructed the water-conducting vessels.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the development of Fusarium neocosmosporiellum. The fungus thrives in warm temperatures and high-moisture soil conditions. It enters the plant through natural openings or wounds in the root system caused by soil insects, nematodes, or improper cultivation practices, making root health a primary factor in disease prevention.
