Description
The causative agent of this destructive disease is the fungus Fusarium perseae, a soil-borne pathogen that primarily targets the vascular system of the host plant. By colonizing the xylem, the fungus obstructs the flow of water and essential nutrients, which is the direct cause of the plant's collapse.
The primary host for this pathogen is the avocado tree (Persea americana). Given the global importance of avocado production, Fusarium perseae presents a significant phytosanitary threat, capable of causing localized outbreaks that can decimate orchards if left unchecked.
Symptoms often manifest as a gradual wilting of the foliage, starting from specific branches and moving toward the entire canopy. A key diagnostic feature is the vascular discoloration found within the stems, which appears as brown streaks, indicating the depth of the fungal colonization inside the woody tissues.
The development and spread of Fusarium perseae are heavily favored by high soil moisture, poor drainage, and warm temperatures. The pathogen is disseminated through infested soil, contaminated irrigation runoff, infected nursery stock, and through tools used in horticultural practices that move between healthy and diseased trees.
Control measures rely heavily on integrated disease management strategies, including the selection of disease-free planting material from certified nurseries. Key interventions include:
- Maintaining optimal soil drainage to prevent root saturation.
- Regular sanitation of pruning tools using appropriate disinfectants.
