Description

The disease is caused by the pathogenic fungus Fusarium phaseoli, which colonizes the vascular tissues of the host plant. By producing toxins and clogging the xylem vessels with mycelium, the pathogen disrupts water and nutrient transport, leading to the characteristic wilt syndrome associated with this species.

Common beans are the primary host for this pathogen. Fusarium phaseoli is a soil-borne fungus that can persist in the environment for several seasons due to its ability to form resistant resting structures, such as chlamydospores, which allow it to survive in the absence of a host crop.

Symptoms often begin as chlorosis (yellowing) of the lower leaves, which eventually progresses upward. Affected plants show signs of wilting, especially during the hottest part of the day, followed by permanent drooping. A cross-section of the lower stem will typically reveal a distinct browning or necrosis of the vascular bundles.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in disease development. High soil temperatures and moderate to high soil moisture levels are optimal for fungal colonization and infection. The pathogen often enters through root wounds caused by nematode feeding or other physical damage, facilitating the spread of the disease throughout the field.

The impact on yield can be devastating, leading to stunted plants, pod abortion, and early senescence. Effective management strategies include the following:

  • Strict adherence to long-term crop rotation cycles.
  • Use of certified, fungicide-treated seeds to ensure healthy germination.
  • Improving soil drainage and physical properties to prevent waterlogging.
  • Selecting resistant bean cultivars as the primary defensive measure.
