As a vascular disease, it systematically colonizes the host's xylem, impeding the translocation of water and essential nutrients from the roots to the canopy. This disruption of physiological functions is the primary reason for the rapid decline of infected trees.

The disease primarily targets trees within the genus Quercus (oaks). It is particularly destructive in nursery environments where high planting density facilitates rapid pathogen transmission, and in mature stands that are already compromised by environmental stress or previous insect damage. The susceptibility of these trees varies depending on soil conditions and the overall health status of the host stand.

The clinical symptoms of Fusarium quercinum infection typically involve leaf wilting, yellowing, and eventual necrosis, often manifesting on one side of the crown first. A diagnostic sign of this condition is the dark, brownish-black discoloration of the sapwood visible when branches are cut. Management strategies focus on sanitation, such as removing infected trees, improving soil drainage to reduce stress, and rigorous disinfection of equipment used in forestry operations.
