Description

The fungus Fusarium ramigenum is a specialized soil-borne pathogen recognized for causing vascular wilt in cotton crops. The pathogen is characterized by its ability to persist in the soil for extended periods as chlamydospores, making it a persistent threat to agricultural production in infested fields.

The primary host for this fungus is the cotton plant. Infection typically occurs when fungal hyphae enter the root system, often via wounds caused by nematodes or cultivation tools. Once inside, the fungus colonizes the plant's vascular tissue, effectively obstructing the xylem and restricting nutrient and water uptake.

Visible symptoms include chlorosis and necrosis of the leaves, which typically begin in the lower canopy and progress upward. Internally, the most definitive sign of infection is a distinct browning or discoloration of the vascular bundles, which can be easily observed by slicing the lower stem of the infected plant.

Environmental factors play a crucial role in disease development; high soil temperatures and fluctuating moisture levels often accelerate the spread of Fusarium ramigenum. The fungus propagates through infected seeds, movement of contaminated soil, and the decomposition of crop debris remaining on the field surface.

Effective management requires an integrated approach to mitigate damage. This includes utilizing resistant cotton cultivars, implementing long-term crop rotation cycles, ensuring the use of high-quality fungicide-treated seeds, and maintaining field hygiene to remove any organic matter that could serve as a reservoir for the pathogen.
