Description
Fusarium redolens is a soil-borne pathogenic fungus belonging to the genus Fusarium, responsible for Fusarium wilt and various root rot diseases in agricultural and horticultural crops. This pathogen is highly adaptable to different environmental conditions and can survive in the soil for several years in the form of chlamydospores or dormant mycelium, making it a persistent threat to crop health.
The host range of Fusarium redolens is extensive, affecting cereals, legumes, various vegetables like tomatoes and peppers, and several ornamental species. The infection typically begins in the root zone, often facilitated by wounds or stress conditions. Once inside, the fungus colonizes the vascular bundles of the plant, restricting the transport of water and nutrients throughout the stem and foliage.
Visible symptoms include progressive wilting, chlorosis (yellowing) of lower leaves, and necrotic lesions on the base of the stem. A definitive sign is the browning of the internal vascular tissue visible upon cross-sectioning the root or crown area. In high-humidity environments, a white or pale pink mycelial growth may develop on the surface of the infected plant tissue.
Disease development is favored by warm soil temperatures (optimally between 20°C and 25°C) and excessive soil moisture. Transmission occurs primarily through contaminated soil, infected seed lots, infested agricultural tools, and irrigation runoff. The pathogen’s ability to survive as a saprophyte on plant debris allows it to build up in the soil, leading to significant yield losses if not managed correctly.
Effective management and prevention strategies include the following practices:
- Implementing long-term crop rotation cycles to starve the pathogen.
- Using high-quality, fungicide-treated certified seeds.
- Maintaining optimal soil drainage and avoiding over-irrigation.
- Selecting and planting crop varieties that exhibit genetic resistance.
- Sanitizing farm equipment and removing infected crop debris after harvest.
