Description
The causative agent of this disease is the fungus Fusarium sacchari. It is a soil-borne pathogen that primarily colonizes the vascular tissues of the host plant, disrupting the translocation of nutrients and water throughout the stem, leading to typical wilt symptoms.
Sugarcane is the primary crop susceptible to Fusarium sacchari infection. The pathogen can attack plants at various developmental stages, but it is particularly devastating when conditions favor the rapid colonization of the stalks, leading to systemic infection throughout the plant clump.
Clinical signs of the disease include chlorosis and yellowing of the leaves, which often progresses into leaf tip necrosis and wilting. A key diagnostic feature is the internal discoloration of the sugarcane stem, where the vascular bundles turn red or dark brown, often accompanied by a distinct smell of decay.
Disease development is highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high soil moisture levels and temperatures ranging from 25 to 30 degrees Celsius. The pathogen spreads through contaminated planting setts, infested soil, and irrigation water, as well as by wind-dispersed spores from infected debris.
The economic impact of fusarium wilt is significant, causing substantial reductions in both biomass and sucrose content. Management practices focus on an integrated approach: using healthy, certified planting material, implementing strict sanitation protocols for equipment, ensuring proper drainage of fields, and rotation with non-host crops to reduce the inoculum load in the soil.
