The fungus Fusarium scirpi is a known plant pathogen responsible for various forms of fusarium blight and rot. It is classified as a hemibiotroph or necrotroph depending on the host and environmental context. This fungus is highly adaptable, allowing it to colonize a wide range of host plants, including cereal crops, legumes, and vegetable cultivars globally.

The visible symptoms of infection include wilting, chlorosis of the foliage, and necrosis at the crown or root base. When environmental conditions provide sufficient humidity, a dense cottony mycelium may appear on the affected surfaces. In seedlings, the pathogen often causes pre-emergence damping-off, leading to significant gaps in plant density across the field.
