Description

Fusarium stilboides is a pathogenic fungus known to cause significant damage to coffee plants. It primarily functions by infecting the bark and vascular tissues, leading to a condition commonly referred to as coffee bark disease. The fungus disrupts the plant's physiological functions, eventually causing the death of affected branches.

The primary host for this pathogen is the coffee tree. While it is most notorious for causing dieback in Arabica coffee, it can also affect other varieties if environmental conditions are favorable. The pathogen effectively colonizes the host's woody stems, causing severe disruption to sap flow, which is essential for plant vitality and fruit development.

Symptoms of the infection include the appearance of depressed lesions and necrotic patches on the bark. As the infection progresses, deep fissures and cankers form, often accompanied by the emergence of pale or orange-colored sporodochia in moist conditions. Infected branches often display severe chlorosis, drooping, and eventually total necrosis leading to plant death.

The development and spread of Fusarium stilboides are highly dependent on environmental variables. High humidity, warm temperatures, and frequent rainfall create ideal conditions for spore germination and colonization. Furthermore, physical injuries to the plant caused by pruning, harvesting, or insect pests act as primary infection courts for the fungus.

Managing this disease requires an integrated approach to ensure plantation health. Key control strategies include the rigorous removal and burning of infected plant parts to reduce inoculum load, the sterilization of pruning tools to prevent cross-contamination, and the application of protective fungicides. Maintaining proper plant spacing and ensuring good airflow are also critical for minimizing infection risk.
