Fusarium subglutinans is a significant fungal pathogen known to cause various diseases in crops, most notably ear rot in maize and pineapple fruitlet core rot. It belongs to the Fusarium genus, which is characterized by its ability to produce dormant structures, allowing the fungus to survive in soil and crop debris for several seasons.
This pathogen has a wide host range, primarily affecting monocots such as corn and sorghum. It acts as both a primary parasite, capable of infecting healthy tissues through natural openings, and an opportunistic pathogen that exploits wounds caused by environmental stress or insect feeding activity.
Symptoms of the infection often include visible mycelial growth appearing as white or salmon-colored patches on the ears. Affected kernels often become discolored, shriveled, or display light-colored streaks. Furthermore, the fungus is known to produce mycotoxins, which significantly reduces the quality of the harvested crop and poses risks to livestock health.
The development and spread of Fusarium subglutinans are highly dependent on moisture levels and temperatures. Warm, humid weather during the silking stage of corn provides optimal conditions for infection.
