Fusarium theobromae is a pathogenic fungus known for causing vascular wilt and necrotic lesions in various tropical and ornamental plants. It is a member of the Fusarium genus, which is characterized by its significant impact on agricultural productivity and potential to colonize various hosts through soil-borne or airborne spores.
The primary hosts for this pathogen include cocoa trees (Theobroma cacao) and several citrus species. The fungus typically enters the plant through compromised tissues, such as wounds from pruning, insect damage, or cracks in the bark, establishing itself within the xylem vessels to disrupt the plant's water transportation.
Visual symptoms of infection usually start with the yellowing of foliage and progressive wilting of branches, even when soil moisture is adequate. As the infection advances, internal vascular tissues show dark brown or reddish discoloration, and external bark may split or exhibit cankers where the fungus produces spores under humid conditions.
The development of the disease is highly dependent on environmental factors, particularly prolonged periods of high humidity and temperatures between 25°C and 30°C. The pathogen spreads via mycelial fragments and microconidia, which are easily disseminated by irrigation water, contaminated farming equipment, and wind-borne dust.
To effectively manage the spread and severity of the disease, growers should focus on the following integrated strategy:
- Implement strict sanitation protocols to remove and destroy infected plant debris.
- Sterilize all pruning equipment with alcohol or bleach between individual plants.
- Ensure adequate soil drainage to prevent conditions that favor fungal growth.
- Select and plant resistant varieties where available in local breeding programs.
- Apply systemic fungicides as a preventative measure during the periods of high infection risk.
