Fusarium wilt

Fusarium venenatum is a filamentous fungus belonging to the genus Fusarium. While widely studied in the food industry, it is also a significant phytopathogen capable of causing serious diseases in various agricultural crops, leading to root rot, stem blight, and plant wilting. The fungus is highly adaptive and persists in the soil for extended periods.

The host range of this pathogen includes essential crops such as wheat, barley, maize, and soy. The primary economic threat posed by this fungus is not only the reduction of crop yield but also the contamination of grain with harmful mycotoxins. These toxins pose a significant health risk to both livestock and humans, strictly limiting the marketability of harvested produce.

Symptoms of the disease are typically observed as yellowing and wilting of the foliage, dark lesions on the roots and root collar, and stunted growth. In the later stages of infection, a visible mycelial mat—often pink or white in color—can appear on the stems or grain spikes, especially in humid conditions, which leads to premature death of the plant tissue.

The development of the fungus is heavily favored by environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and temperatures ranging from 18°C to 25°C. Stress factors such as soil compaction, poor drainage, nutritional deficiencies, and damage caused by insect pests significantly increase the susceptibility of plants to Fusarium infection, facilitating rapid spread across fields.

Effective management requires a multi-layered approach to minimize the risk of infection and spread:

• Implement diverse crop rotation cycles to break the pathogen's life cycle.
• Select and use certified, high-quality, fungicide-treated seeds.
• Manage soil moisture and ensure proper field drainage to prevent waterlogging.
• Deeply incorporate crop residues into the soil to accelerate decomposition.
• Apply preventative or curative fungicides during high-risk phenological stages.
