Description
Fusarium vorosii is a fungal pathogen belonging to the Fusarium graminearum species complex. It is a major causal agent of Fusarium head blight (FHB), a devastating disease affecting various small-grain cereals worldwide. This fungus is known for its high virulence and ability to contaminate harvests with harmful mycotoxins.
The primary host plants for this pathogen include wheat, barley, rye, and oats. Infection typically occurs at the anthesis (flowering) stage, when susceptible spikes are exposed to fungal spores. The pathogen colonizes the florets and gradually spreads through the rachis, resulting in premature bleaching of the spikelets above the point of infection.
Symptoms are easily identifiable in the field by the premature whitening of affected spikelets, which contrast sharply with the healthy green parts of the spike. Under high humidity, a distinctive salmon-pink or orange mold layer develops on the glumes. Infected kernels often appear shriveled, discolored, and contain high levels of dangerous toxins like deoxynivalenol (DON).
The development and spread of Fusarium vorosii are highly dependent on weather conditions, particularly heavy rainfall and high humidity during the flowering period. The fungus overwinters on crop residues, which act as the primary inoculum source for the following season. Wind and rain splashes then facilitate the transmission of spores to the heads of the next crop.
Integrated disease management is essential to minimize losses caused by this pathogen. Key strategies include the selection of resistant cultivars, deep tillage to bury crop residues, and rotation with non-host crops. Applying effective fungicides during the peak of flowering is the most critical intervention to suppress the development of head blight and ensure safer crop yields.
