Description
Bacterial leaf blight of rice, caused by the bacterium Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae, is one of the most serious diseases affecting rice production worldwide. The pathogen targets the plant's vascular system, causing systemic infection that severely restricts the translocation of water and essential nutrients to the leaves and developing panicles.
While rice (Oryza sativa) is the primary host, the bacterium can survive on alternative weed hosts in the environment. The bacteria typically gain entry into the plant tissues through hydathodes or wounds caused by insect feeding or mechanical damage, subsequently multiplying rapidly within the xylem vessels.
Early symptoms appear as water-soaked lesions along the leaf margins, which later become yellow and greyish-white. In humid conditions, milky or yellow bacterial droplets may be observed on the leaf surface. As the infection progresses, entire leaves may wilt and turn white, a severe stage commonly known as the "kresek" syndrome.
The spread of the disease is highly dependent on environmental factors, particularly high temperatures and humidity, which favor bacterial multiplication. Wind-driven rain is a primary mechanism for the dispersal of bacteria from infected to healthy plants within the field, while contaminated irrigation water further facilitates the rapid spread of the pathogen.
