Scab is a devastating fungal disease caused by various species of the Fusicladium genus, which represents the asexual state of the Venturia fungus. This disease primarily affects fruit trees such as apples and pears, leading to significant economic losses in commercial orchards. The fungus thrives in cool, moist environments and can infect almost all green parts of the host plant.

The primary host range includes trees within the Rosaceae family. Infections typically begin on the newly emerged leaves and flowers in early spring. As the season progresses, the fungus spreads to the developing fruits, causing characteristic lesions that ruin the appearance and market value of the produce. Identifying the pathogen at an early stage is critical for successful disease management.

Symptomatology involves the appearance of olive-green, velvet-like spots on the leaves, which gradually darken to black. As the disease develops, these lesions become cracked and corky, particularly on the fruit. Severe infections can lead to premature defoliation, stunted fruit growth, and in some cases, the death of young, vulnerable twigs if the pathogen remains uncontrolled over several seasons.

Environmental conditions are the main drivers of disease spread. The fungus requires moisture—such as rain or heavy dew—for the spores to germinate and penetrate the host tissue. Because the primary inoculum often survives the winter in fallen leaves on the orchard floor, environmental humidity in the spring is the key factor that determines the severity of the initial infection cycle.

Effective control requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy that focuses on reducing the source of inoculum and protecting the plant during critical growth stages. By understanding the biology of Fusicladium, growers can time their treatments to prevent the establishment of the disease, ensuring healthier trees and higher yields throughout the year.
