Description

The fungus Fusicladium carpineum is the causative agent of hornbeam scab, a significant fungal disease affecting trees of the genus Carpinus. This pathogen belongs to the group of ascomycetes and primarily targets leaves, petioles, and tender green shoots. It is recognized as a common problem in both natural forests and urban landscape plantings where hornbeam is used as an ornamental species.

The primary symptoms manifest as small, dark brown to olive-green spots appearing on the leaves during the early growing season. As the infection progresses, these lesions enlarge and may merge, eventually leading to chlorosis, necrotic tissue death, and premature leaf drop. Young shoots may become distorted, blackened, or show stunted growth, which severely compromises the tree's architecture.

Development of Fusicladium carpineum is heavily dependent on moisture and temperature levels. Extended periods of rainfall, high humidity, and moderate temperatures provide optimal conditions for the germination of conidia. The fungus survives the winter dormant period within infected fallen leaves and dormant buds, serving as the primary source of inoculum when spring weather returns.

The economic and aesthetic damage caused by this pathogen is significant. Infected trees exhibit reduced vigor due to the loss of photosynthetic leaf area, which limits the tree's ability to store carbohydrates for the winter. In nursery settings, hornbeam scab can render entire batches of saplings unmarketable due to their unsightly appearance and poor growth performance.

Management strategies focus on sanitation and chemical intervention. It is critical to remove and destroy all leaf litter from the site to reduce the pathogen load for the following season. Pruning diseased branches and ensuring adequate spacing between trees can increase airflow, thereby preventing the persistent moisture required for fungal colonization. If the infection is severe, targeted fungicide applications in the spring are recommended to protect the emerging foliage.
