Fusicladium obducens is the causal agent of apple scab, a destructive fungal disease that affects commercial and residential apple orchards worldwide. This pathogen specifically targets the leaves, blossoms, and fruits, significantly impacting both yield quantity and fruit marketability.

The host range of this fungus is primarily limited to trees of the genus Malus. As the fungus infects the host tissue, it develops conidia that serve as secondary inoculum throughout the growing season, facilitating the rapid spread of the disease under favorable environmental conditions.

Symptoms of the infection typically appear as olive-green to black velvety spots on leaf surfaces and fruit skins. In severe cases, the lesions on the fruit cause cracking and tissue corking, leading to fruit deformation and stunted growth, which makes the produce unsuitable for sale.

Disease development is heavily dependent on moisture and moderate temperatures. The fungus overwinters in fallen, infected leaf litter, where it produces pseudothecia. In the spring, primary infections are initiated by ascospores discharged from these structures during rainy weather, which land on susceptible host tissue.
