Fusarium wilt of peas

Fusarium wilt of peas is a destructive vascular disease caused by the soil-borne fungus Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. pisi (race 1). This pathogen invades the root system, colonizes the xylem (water-conducting tissue), and physically blocks the upward flow of water and nutrients, which inevitably results in the wilting and death of the host plant.

The fungus is host-specific to peas and can persist in the soil for many years as chlamydospores. These resting structures are highly resistant to adverse environmental conditions and serve as the primary inoculum for future outbreaks. The infection can spread through infested soil particles, contaminated farm equipment, or, less frequently, through infected seed lots.

Initial symptoms are often subtle, presenting as a slight yellowing of the lower foliage and stunting of the plant. As the disease progresses, the leaves curl, the stem base turns reddish-brown to dark brown, and the plant undergoes permanent wilting. A key diagnostic feature is the distinct discoloration of the vascular ring inside the stem, visible when cut longitudinally.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in disease severity. Fusarium wilt thrives in warm temperatures, typically between 20°C and 25°C, combined with moderate to high soil moisture. Poorly drained soils or soils with low pH levels often exacerbate the incidence of the disease, as they create an environment that favors fungal activity and weakens the root system of the pea plants.

The economic impact of this disease is significant, often leading to total loss of yield in severely infested areas. Prevention is the cornerstone of management since curative options are limited once the infection is established.
