Tracheomycosis wilt

Description

Tracheomycosis wilt refers to a group of fungal plant diseases that primarily target the vascular system of the host. The most common pathogens involved are soil-borne fungi such as Fusarium and Verticillium species. These fungi invade the roots and grow into the xylem, physically obstructing the transport of water and mineral nutrients, while simultaneously releasing toxic metabolites.

The host range for these diseases is broad, impacting many economically vital crops. Key examples include solanaceous crops like tomatoes and peppers, cucurbits such as cucumbers and melons, as well as various ornamental plants and cotton. Infections can occur throughout the growing season, often causing devastating losses in both greenhouse and open-field production systems.

The primary symptom is the wilting of foliage, which initially affects only one side of the plant or individual leaves during the heat of the day. As the disease advances, the wilting becomes permanent, accompanied by chlorosis and necrosis of the leaves. A hallmark diagnostic feature is the dark discoloration of vascular tissue visible when cutting across the stem or root crown.

Favorable conditions for development include moist soil, moderate to high temperatures, and poor drainage, which stresses the plants and facilitates fungal penetration. Pathogens spread through contaminated soil, infected seeds, and agricultural machinery. Because these fungi can survive for many years in the soil as sclerotia or chlamydospores, once an area is infected, it remains a high-risk zone.

Management is challenging and relies heavily on integrated pest management (IPM) strategies. Essential measures include selecting resistant cultivars, implementing long-term crop rotations, and ensuring proper soil drainage to avoid waterlogged conditions. Chemical control is limited in efficacy; therefore, preventative sanitation, such as removing infected debris and disinfesting tools, is critical to minimize the spread of the infection.
