Galerina fasciculata is a wood-decaying fungal species belonging to the Strophariaceae family. In agronomy and arboriculture, it is recognized as a saprotrophic organism that acts as a secondary pathogen, colonizing dead or physiologically weakened wood and accelerating the process of timber decay.

The disease is initiated by the fungal mycelium penetrating the wood tissue through bark wounds, frost cracks, or improper pruning cuts. Once established, the fungus produces specialized enzymes that degrade complex polymers like lignin and cellulose, leading to white rot and the structural failure of the host plant.

The fungus primarily affects weakened deciduous and coniferous trees. It is frequently observed on tree stumps, fallen logs, and old fruit trees that have developed internal heart rot. Trees under environmental stress or those with compromised immunity are the most susceptible to colonizing by this fungus.

Symptoms of the infection include the emergence of clusters of small, honey-brown mushrooms at the base of the trunk or on exposed roots. The presence of these fruiting bodies is a clear indicator that the fungal network has already permeated the internal structure of the tree, potentially leading to instability and eventual death.

Effective management and protection strategies include regular sanitary inspections and the immediate removal of highly decayed organic matter near healthy plants. Proper pruning techniques, prompt treatment of open wounds with fungicidal pastes, and general tree vitality maintenance are crucial to preventing the establishment and spread of this wood-degrading fungus.
