Description

Galerina marginata is a wood-decaying fungus that acts as a saprotroph, causing white rot in woody plant tissues. While not a primary pathogen of healthy trees, it poses a significant threat to weakened or neglected orchard specimens by accelerating the decomposition of lignin and cellulose within the heartwood.

The pathogen is a basidiomycete that infiltrates host trees through wounds, frost cracks, or improper pruning cuts. Once established, the mycelium spreads throughout the internal wood structure, compromising the structural integrity of the tree and hindering the transport of water and nutrients within the xylem.

It affects a variety of broadleaf and coniferous species found in agricultural landscapes. The most distinct sign of infection is the appearance of small, brownish mushrooms with a membranous ring on the stipe, typically growing in clusters on decaying logs, stumps, or the lower sections of weakened tree trunks.

The spread and development of the fungus are heavily influenced by environmental factors such as high humidity and moderate temperatures ranging from +10°C to +20°C. Stagnant air and poor orchard drainage create an ideal microclimate for the spores to germinate and colonize the bark of stressed trees.

The damage caused by this fungus can lead to premature tree failure and significant productivity losses if left unmanaged. Essential control and prevention strategies include:

  • Regular inspection and removal of decayed wood and old stumps from the orchard.
  • Proper pruning techniques to ensure smooth, clean cuts that heal quickly.
  • Application of specialized sealants or disinfectants to any deep bark damage.
  • Maintaining optimal tree vigor through balanced fertilization and irrigation to prevent tissue stress.
