Galzinia is a genus of fungi belonging to the Corticiaceae family. In agronomic and arboricultural contexts, these fungi are identified as pathogens responsible for various forms of wood decay, specifically contributing to white rot development in woody plant tissues and ornamental species.

The disease is classified as a wood-decay mycosis. The pathogen typically acts by colonizing dead or compromised tissues, though it can transition to a parasitic phase on weakened host plants. Entry points for the fungus are primarily mechanical injuries, frost cracks, and pruning wounds that have not been properly sealed.

Plants affected by Galzinia include a wide range of broad-leaved trees and shrubs. Fruit-bearing orchards and landscape plantings are particularly susceptible when proper maintenance practices, such as wound management and canopy aeration, are neglected over long periods.

Symptoms of Galzinia infection manifest as thin, crust-like mycelial mats appearing on the bark or exposed wood. As the fungus breaks down the lignin, the wood loses its structural strength, becomes bleached or bleached-white in appearance, and shows signs of internal decay. The presence of a "mushroomy" odor near the infection site is common.

Environmental conditions that favor the spread of this fungus include high relative humidity, poor air circulation, and moderate temperatures. Spores are easily disseminated by wind, rainwater splash, and insect vectors that move from colonized timber to healthy, susceptible plants in the vicinity.

Control measures rely heavily on integrated disease management. This includes the removal and destruction of infected wood to prevent spore release, the application of protective wound dressings to prevent new infections, and the thinning of tree canopies to improve airflow. Maintaining plant vigor through proper fertilization and irrigation is also a key preventive strategy against fungal colonization.
