Description

Southern bracket (Ganoderma adspersum) is a perennial wood-decay fungus that primarily affects the heartwood of deciduous trees. This pathogen is a significant concern for arborists and foresters, as it causes a progressive white rot that severely compromises the structural stability of the host plant, often leading to sudden failure.

The fungus is commonly found on a wide range of broadleaved species, such as oak, beech, lime, and horse chestnut. It typically colonizes trees that are already suffering from stress, environmental pollution, or mechanical injuries, although it can also infect seemingly healthy specimens through deep bark wounds or root grafts.

The diagnostic sign of infection is the presence of hard, woody, bracket-like fungal growths on the lower stem or roots. The upper surface of the fruit body is often dark brown or blackish with a velvety texture, while the underside features a porous surface that releases abundant rusty-brown spores during the reproductive phase.

The development of the fungus is highly dependent on favorable humidity levels and the availability of unprotected wood surfaces. Once established, the mycelium spreads throughout the internal structure, degrading lignin and cellulose, which eventually results in the decay of the inner core, while the outer layers of the wood may remain intact for some time.

Effective management focuses on proactive care, such as minimizing pruning wounds and avoiding damage to the root system during construction or landscaping work. Infected trees should be professionally assessed for risk; in high-traffic urban areas, removal is often necessary to prevent structural collapse and the spread of spores to nearby healthy trees.
