Description

Ganoderma orbiforme is a basidiomycete fungus known to be a significant pathogen that induces white rot in woody plants. As a wood-decaying organism, it systematically breaks down lignin and cellulose, leading to the structural failure of stems, branches, and root systems, which often results in the premature death of the host.

The fungus typically attacks a range of deciduous tree species. Infection commonly begins when fungal spores enter the plant through mechanical injuries, pruning wounds, sunscald, or frost cracks, allowing the mycelium to colonize the inner heartwood and sapwood effectively.

The primary clinical signs include the emergence of perennial fruiting bodies (conks) on the trunk. These are generally tough, woody, and orbicular in shape. Internally, the wood loses its mechanical strength and takes on a bleached, fibrous appearance, which is a hallmark of white rot pathogens.

The development and spread of Ganoderma orbiforme are highly dependent on environmental factors, particularly high humidity and moderate temperatures, which facilitate the production and dissemination of spores via wind and water. Poor site management, such as neglecting diseased stumps, significantly increases the pressure of the inoculum.

Management strategies focus on integrated pest management practices rather than curative chemical applications. Prevention is critical and involves maintaining tree vigor, minimizing unnecessary wounding during maintenance, and the immediate removal and destruction of infected wood and stumps to eliminate primary sources of infection within the ecosystem.
