Ganoderma tornatum is a species of polypore fungus known as a serious pathogen of woody plants. It acts as a primary wood-decay agent, specifically causing white rot, which leads to the degradation of cellulose and lignin within the trunk and root system.
This pathogen targets a variety of broad-leaved tree species, particularly those that are already stressed by environmental conditions or physical injuries. It often infects trees through wounds, branch stubs, or damage to the bark caused by heavy machinery or pests.
Symptoms of an infection include the presence of persistent, woody, shelf-like fruiting bodies (conks) on the bark. Internally, the wood becomes bleached, stringy, and fragile, resulting in structural instability that makes the tree prone to falling or snapping during inclement weather.
The fungus thrives in environments with high humidity and moderate temperatures, which are conducive to spore production and dissemination. Spores are primarily dispersed by wind currents, settling on fresh wounds where they germinate and initiate the infection process within the sapwood and heartwood.
Effective management strategies are vital to maintaining tree health and safety. Key interventions include:
- removing and destroying severely infected trees to reduce inoculum sources;
- protecting fresh pruning wounds with appropriate fungicides or wound sealants;
- maintaining tree vigor through balanced fertilization and adequate irrigation;
