Description
Ganodermataceae is a family of polypore fungi known for causing severe white rot diseases in both forest and orchard trees. These fungi act as necrotrophic pathogens, breaking down complex structural components of wood such as lignin and cellulose, which eventually leads to the structural collapse of the host tree.
The host range of Ganodermataceae includes a wide variety of woody plants, ranging from common hardwoods and oaks to palm species and various plantation crops. Infection typically occurs through root grafts, physical wounds in the bark, or neglected pruning cuts that remain exposed to the environment.
Visible symptoms often include the development of bracket-like fruiting bodies (conks) on the lower trunk or near the root flare. The internal wood exhibits typical signs of white rot: it becomes bleached, soft, and stringy as the fungus degrades the wood matrix, severely compromising the tree's vascular system.
The development and spread of these fungi are highly dependent on high moisture levels and warm temperatures. Spores are primarily dispersed through the air currents and raindrops, seeking out suitable entry points on host trees. Once established, the mycelium spreads slowly through the heartwood, often causing damage long before visible signs appear.
Management and prevention focus primarily on maintaining tree vigor through proper irrigation and nutrition. Crucial control measures involve the removal of infected wood, sterilization of pruning tools to prevent cross-contamination, and the application of wound dressings to protect fresh cuts. In severe cases, the infected tree should be completely removed to prevent spread to neighboring plants.
