Gastrosporiaceae smut is a plant disease caused by fungi belonging to the Gastrosporiaceae family. These pathogens are recognized for their specialized impact on monocotyledonous crops, specifically targeting the generative phases of development and severely compromising grain yields.
The pathogen functions as an obligate parasite, infecting the host plant during early developmental stages or through floral infection. Once inside, the fungal mycelium colonizes the developing spikelets, eventually replacing healthy grain tissues with a dense, dark mass of teliospores, which serves as the primary inoculum for future cycles.
