Gautieria otthii is a hypogeous fungal species that, within agricultural environments, acts as a soil-borne pathogen. While typically associated with mycorrhizal relations in forest ecosystems, in cultivated fields and nurseries, it can exhibit parasitic behavior, targeting the root systems of various woody and ornamental plants.
The pathogen thrives in moist, poorly drained soils where it infects the root cortex. The fungus colonizes the root tissues, disrupting the vascular system and preventing the effective uptake of water and essential nutrients, which eventually leads to the systemic decline of the host plant.
Crop species most susceptible to this pathogen include fruit-bearing trees and nursery stock, particularly in high-density planting schemes. The infection spreads through the soil via mycelial growth, often following the root network of the plants, which makes it particularly dangerous in stagnant environmental conditions.
Symptoms of Gautieria otthii infection include chlorosis (yellowing of leaves), stunted growth, and sudden wilting during periods of stress. A thorough examination of the root system often reveals necrotic patches, soft tissue decay, and the presence of whitish fungal filaments that may develop into small, subterranean fruiting bodies.
Effective management requires a combination of cultural and chemical interventions. Improving soil drainage is the primary step to limit the pathogen's development. Additionally, using biological control agents like Trichoderma species helps to colonize the root zone and outcompete the fungus. In severe cases, infected plants should be removed and destroyed to prevent further spread within the field.
