Gelatinodiscaceae is a family of sac fungi that can act as pathogens causing necrotic lesions and rot in woody plants. These fungi are distinguished by their gelatinous apothecia, which allow them to survive and reproduce in moist environments, often spreading during periods of high humidity.
The disease primarily manifests as bark necrosis and can lead to internal decay of the woody stems. While some species within the family are primarily saprotrophic, they can opportunistically infect trees that are weakened due to environmental stress, poor maintenance, or mechanical wounding.
These pathogens typically affect ornamental trees, shrubs, and certain orchard species. Infection is most likely to occur in areas where the plant's surface remains damp for extended periods, providing the necessary conditions for fungal spores to germinate and penetrate the host tissue.
Key symptoms include the appearance of distinct, jelly-like fruiting bodies on the bark or branches. As the infection progresses, the surrounding area may become discolored, soft, and necrotic, eventually leading to structural damage and the potential death of the affected branch or stem.
