Geminago refers to a group of viral plant diseases caused by viruses within the Geminiviridae family. These pathogens are characterized by a single-stranded DNA genome and a distinctive twin-like morphology of the virions, which is the defining physical feature of this viral group.
This disease impacts a wide range of economically important crops, including tomatoes, beans, peppers, cucurbits, and cotton. The economic damage caused by these viruses is significant, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions where the insect vectors thrive throughout the growing season.
Symptoms of infection are diverse but typically include leaf yellowing (chlorosis), severe mosaic patterns, curling, distortion of leaf margins, and stunted plant growth. Infected plants often exhibit reduced vigor and yield, and in susceptible varieties, the fruit development can be completely arrested, leading to total crop failure.
