Genea sphaerica is a fungus within the Pezizales order, documented in phytopathological studies as a potential soil-borne pathogen. While often associated with forest soils, it can negatively impact cultivated crops by colonizing the root zone, thereby disrupting nutrient uptake and overall plant physiological functions.

The fungus acts as a facultative parasite that thrives on underground biomass. Its primary harmful effect is the physical interference with the host's root system, leading to stunted growth, nutrient deficiency symptoms, and in severe cases, the collapse of root tissues due to opportunistic secondary infections.

Typical symptoms of infection include chlorosis, wilting during peak transpiration periods, and stunted aerial growth. Beneath the surface, the presence of the pathogen is often identified by the formation of small, round, tuber-like ascomata located in the rhizosphere, often surrounded by a dense network of hyphae.
