Description

Geosmithia morbida is a pathogenic fungus responsible for the devastating condition known as Thousand Cankers Disease. This disease primarily targets walnut trees, colonizing the phloem and cambium layers, which disrupts nutrient transport and eventually leads to the death of the host tree.

The primary host for this pathogen is the black walnut (Juglans nigra), though it can infect other walnut species. The fungus exists in a symbiotic relationship with the walnut twig beetle (Pityophthorus juglandis), which acts as the main vector, transporting fungal spores from tree to tree during its feeding and breeding cycles.

Symptoms initially manifest as flagging or yellowing leaves in the upper crown, followed by crown thinning and branch dieback. When the outer bark is removed, numerous small, circular, or oblong cankers are visible around the beetle galleries, which eventually coalesce and girdle the branch or trunk, killing the tree.

The development of the disease is heavily influenced by environmental conditions and the population density of the beetle vector. Higher temperatures favor the development of the beetle, increasing the frequency of transmission events. Once an area is infested, the disease can spread rapidly throughout the plantation if not managed promptly.

There is currently no cure for trees already suffering from an advanced stage of the disease. Therefore, management relies entirely on prevention, such as enforcing strict quarantine protocols, controlling beetle populations through integrated pest management, and promptly removing and destroying infected trees to slow the spread of the pathogen.
