Gibellula is a genus of entomopathogenic fungi within the order Hypocreales. Unlike traditional plant diseases, Gibellula does not infect plant tissues. Instead, it functions as a natural regulator of arthropod populations, specifically targeting spiders and certain mite species that inhabit the plant canopy.
The fungus acts as a pathogen that completes its life cycle by consuming the internal tissues of the host. After infection, the mycelium eventually erupts through the host's exoskeleton to produce spores, which are critical for the survival and continued dispersal of the fungus within the agroecosystem.
Key symptoms of the presence of Gibellula are easily identified on the bodies of the affected arachnids. The host becomes covered in a dense, fuzzy layer of hyphae, often appearing white, yellow, or orange. This growth phase eventually leads to the death of the host, effectively removing a potential predator or pest from the immediate environment.
