Gibellulopsis is a genus of soil-borne fungi that acts as a serious plant pathogen, primarily causing vascular wilt diseases in a variety of economically significant crops. The most notable species, Gibellulopsis nigrescens, was formerly classified under the Verticillium genus. These fungi colonize the plant's xylem, obstructing water transport, which results in the classic wilting symptoms and eventual death of the affected plant tissues.

This pathogen impacts a broad range of hosts, including essential vegetable crops such as tomatoes, eggplants, and potatoes, as well as cotton and ornamental plants. Because of its ability to survive in the soil for extended periods as microsclerotia, it poses a significant threat to agricultural production, particularly in regions where intensive farming practices are used without sufficient crop rotation.

The primary signs of infection involve chlorosis of the lower leaves, which eventually progresses to necrosis and wilting of the entire plant. A key diagnostic feature is the browning or discolouration of the vascular tissues within the stem when cut. As the disease advances, the plant ceases growth, and yields drop significantly, making early detection vital for effective management of the pathogen.

Development and spread of the disease are influenced by soil temperature and moisture levels. The pathogen typically thrives in warm, temperate climates. It enters the plant through the root system, often facilitated by damage from nematodes or mechanical injury. Once introduced to a field, it can be spread rapidly by contaminated equipment, runoff water, or the movement of infested soil across different growing zones.

Effective control strategies require a combination of preventative agricultural practices:

  • Strict adherence to crop rotation cycles to starve the pathogen by removing susceptible hosts.
  • Utilization of disease-resistant or tolerant cultivars when available.
  • Rigorous sanitation practices, including the removal and destruction of crop residues post-harvest.
  • Maintenance of proper irrigation and fertilization to minimize plant stress, which can predispose plants to fungal attack.
