It is scientifically inaccurate to classify Gigaspora heterogama as a plant disease. On the contrary, it is a species of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi that forms a mutualistic relationship with the roots of host plants, acting as a natural bio-stimulant for growth and resilience.
The biological nature of this organism is based on the formation of arbuscules within root cortical cells. Through these structures, the fungus facilitates the transport of phosphorus, nitrogen, and other essential micronutrients from the soil into the plant tissue, in exchange for sugars derived from photosynthesis.
This fungus hosts a diverse range of crops, including cereals, legumes, and various vegetables. Its impact is particularly significant in nutrient-depleted soils where its extensive network of extraradical hyphae allows the plant to explore a much larger volume of soil than its own root system could achieve alone.
There are no symptoms of infection, as the presence of Gigaspora heterogama promotes vigorous growth and enhanced systemic resistance. Plants inoculated with this fungus often display better tolerance to abiotic stresses such as drought, salinity, and transplant shock, which contributes to higher final yields.
