Glenosporosis is a fungal plant disease caused by the microscopic pathogen Glenospora graphii. This fungus belongs to the group of imperfect fungi and typically manifests as specific necrotic lesions on various parts of the growing plant. The disease is characterized by the gradual destruction of tissues, which, if left uncontrolled, leads to a significant decline in the host plant's immunity and overall health.

The range of affected plants primarily includes ornamental species and certain woody plants, though the pathogen can adapt to a wide spectrum of hosts under favorable conditions. Foliage is the most common target, where the fungus forms colonies that disrupt photosynthesis and metabolic processes, eventually leading to premature wilting and tissue death.

The primary symptoms include the appearance of small, expanding spots of a graphite or dark-brown color, which eventually coalesce over the leaf surface. A characteristic powdery or velvety bloom consisting of fungal conidia is often visible in the center of the lesions. The infection can persist in plant debris, creating a high risk of recurrence in subsequent growing seasons.

Protection strategies require a holistic approach based on strict adherence to good agricultural practices and the use of chemical controls. Recommended measures include:

  • Thinning out dense plantings to ensure optimal air circulation and reduce humidity.
  • Prompt removal and sanitary disposal of all infected plant residues.
  • Prophylactic treatments with copper-based products or systemic fungicides during active growth periods.
