The primary host for this fungus is the cacao tree, where it targets the pods during their developmental stages. Infection usually begins when spores land on the pod surface and exploit small structural weak points or wounds caused by insect feeding or mechanical friction, allowing the fungus to invade the internal fruit tissues.

Diagnostic symptoms include the appearance of water-soaked, necrotic lesions that expand rapidly across the fruit surface. As the infection deepens, the tissue softens, and a dense, whitish or yellowish fungal growth becomes visible on the exterior. This sporulating mat indicates that the pathogen is actively producing new spores to spread the disease further.

Environmental conditions are the primary drivers of this disease's spread. High ambient humidity combined with warm temperatures creates the perfect microclimate for mycelial growth and sporulation. Dense plantation canopies that restrict air movement exacerbate these conditions, keeping pods moist for longer periods and facilitating rapid transmission between neighboring plants.
