Gliocephalotrichum fruit rot is a destructive plant disease caused by the fungus Gliocephalotrichum simmonsii. This pathogen is a significant concern in agricultural pathology, specifically impacting postharvest storage and the quality of transported tropical and exotic fruit commodities.
The fungus is known to infect a variety of crops, primarily targeting fruits such as papaya, mango, and cacao pods. It acts as a saprotrophic or weakly parasitic agent that takes advantage of physiological weaknesses or physical injuries on the fruit surface, initiating rapid decomposition of host tissues.
Symptoms initially appear as small, water-soaked lesions that expand rapidly across the fruit surface. As the infection progresses, the lesion area turns brown and becomes covered with a characteristic white or pale-colored fungal growth consisting of mycelia and conidiophores. The fruit pulp eventually turns into a soft, rotten mass, often accompanied by an unpleasant odor.
The development of Gliocephalotrichum simmonsii is highly dependent on environmental conditions, specifically high humidity and warm temperatures. In such environments, the fungus can complete its life cycle quickly, producing large quantities of spores that easily disperse to surrounding healthy fruit, leading to rapid storage rot outbreaks.
Management of this disease requires a combination of strict postharvest hygiene and biological or chemical control strategies. Producers should focus on minimizing physical damage during harvesting and packing, maintaining optimal cool chain temperatures, and ensuring adequate ventilation in storage facilities to keep humidity below the levels that favor fungal growth.
